J.D. Moulton Awarded National BSA Medal of Merit

Used Webelos First Aid Training to Save Father's Life

Troop 9323 Scout JD (Joseph) Moulton was recently recognized for his quick thinking and decisive actions which prevented a tragedy.  As a Webelos Scout at the time, JD put into practice first aid skills he had learned in his Den. Moulton was presented the National BSA Medal of Merit at his troop’s Court of Honor on April 15, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in New Prague.

Here is a description of the incident:

In May of 2018, JD (Joseph) Moulton was having a quiet dinner at home with his parents and sister, when his father began choking on a piece of onion that had lodged in his throat. Despite coughing several times, his father was unable to breath and was turning blue. He waved at his wife and tried to say “Call 911” but couldn’t speak. She could see he was in distress and ran for the phone, which she had planned to hand to JD while attempting the Heimlich Maneuver, but before she could do so, JD jumped up, grabbed his father and successfully performed the maneuver himself.

In describing the incident, his father stated: “JD was calm and controlled during the episode, and just reacted without any direction. He had learned first aid during his Webelos/Arrow of Light ranks in Cub Scouts, and by his quick action saved my life.”

Congratulations JD!
