On May 8, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints announced that they will be starting their own worldwide youth program effective 12/31/2019. This will replace Scouting as the mandatory program for all their boys that had been in place in the United States since 1913.
This change will make Scouting an option for youth and families as it is for all other denominations. We expect that most of our 800 LDS youth members currently enrolled (of our 32.000 youth members) will choose to continue in the program, with parents valuing Scouting’s power to positively transform their children’s lives.
In light of the recent LDS Church announcement that Scouting units will no longer be chartered by the church effective 12/31/19, we want you to know that we value your involvement and hope that you and your unit’s families will continue in Scouting.
Our council deeply appreciates the over 100 year relationship we’ve had the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and we respect it’s decision to focus on programming that helps meet the needs of its increasingly global membership.
With more than 800 local youth and 500 adults participating in Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs, we want you to know that there are options for remaining part of the Scouting Family. We hope that all of the young men will continue to choose Scouting in addition to their Church and school activities. Cub Scouts will continue to be a fun family-based activity full of fun, learning and achievement. Scouting will continue to offer a unique blend of learning and adventure and the opportunity to earn the Eagle award.
Our council’s volunteers and staff will work with you to continue the tradition of Scouting, Eagle Scouts and more beyond 2019. We will help to ensure a smooth transition for all youth and adults into current community-sponsored units or through the creation of new community-sponsored units. Our goal is to help all families find a unit that supports their child, family and community.
We are excited about our future together and we will work to continue providing families and their children with incredible life experiences that build character and leadership. We will be in touch in the weeks ahead to help you and your families determine how Scouting can continue to be part of your future.
Thank you for the important role you will play in bringing our strong character and leadership building program to more Scouts in the future.
Yours in Scouting,
William Broday, Council President
David Cousins, Council Commissioner
John Andrews, Scout Executive/CEO
