BSA Practices With Regard to Gender Identity

National Policy Implemented

On January 30, 2017 the BSA implemented a policy for the first time with regard to transgender children and our single gender programs of Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting. The BSA will now accept and register youth in any/all programs based on a parent’s confirmation of gender identity.

Previously, the national office practice had been to refer to the gender listed on a birth certificate for Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting – although our co-ed programs have been utilizing parent certification of gender for the past few years.

Our goal is always to bring the benefits of Scouting to the greatest number of youth possible while remaining true to expectations of appropriate behavior and our core values, outlined in the Scout Oath and Law.
