July Membership Update

Family Scouting is alive and STRONG in our Northern Star Scouting programs!

Scouting membership in Northern Star Scouting is going strong! Webelos Transition is currently +2% over last year, and we have seen more than 30 more Webelos Transition over this same time last year. It is obvious that several of our districts are running a Webelos Transition campaign as a district wide effort to help Webelos become Scouts in a troop, and their efforts are showing. Congratulations are in order!

The following districts who are tracking ahead in the percent of Webelos who have transitioned over last year: Mustang, Northern Lights, Three Rivers, Eagle River, Great Rivers, Northwest, Dan Patch, Kaposia, and Metro Lakes!

Our Orion field team and Phoenix field team are also ahead in Webelos Transition! AND to three districts who have achieved their Webel;os Transition goal: Mustang, Northwest and Metro Lakes. And remember that a new award was created last fall for Webelos who make the transition to a troop – the Northern Star Scouting Trailhead Award.

Membership Growth Achievers

Congratulations to several of our districts which have membership growth over this time last year: Lake Minnetonka, Mustang, Northern Lights, Northwest, Huron, Polaris Exploring and Zulu. Congratulations to the districts who currently have more units now than last year: Crow River, Lake Minnetonka, Mustang, Chief Black Dog, Great Rivers, Northwest, Southern Skies, and Huron.

Recruitment Campaigns

ALL of our Scouting units are encouraged to conduct a recruitment campaign in an effort to get new young people in to one of our Scouting programs.

NEW this spring: Troops and Crews have recruitment goals and RECOGNITIONS! If a troop or crew makes their base goal by June 30, their unit receives $25 toward one of our camps, and if they achieve their stretch goal, the unit will receive $50 toward one of our camps. Spring was chosen to allow troops to be able to combine their Webelos Transition efforts and a recruiting campaign for new Scouts at the same time.

“Recruit a Friend” is a continuing recognition program.

  • Any Scout who recruits a friend, they are BOTH eligible to receive a lock-blade pocket knife.
  • Any Venturer or Sea Scout who recruits a friend, they cane each choose between a pair of custom Venturing socks or a lock-blade pocket knife.
  • Any NEW troop, crew or ship with 10 or more youth, all are eligible for the lock-blade pocket knife.

Recruiting resources are available through your Program Relations Executive.

A “Scoutlook on Life” is our NEW fall recruitment campaign theme!

A new campaign is well underway for the Fall Recruitment Campaign, which is September 19 – and the theme is: A Scoutlook on Life! We all know that Scouts, Scouters, and Scouting families look at what life has to offer differently. Challenges are accepted, confidence is stronger, relationships are built, teams are formed. With the new campaign theme, we have MANY new marketing resources:

  • fliers, posters, stickers, mailers, yard signs, banners and more.
  • We will still have wristbands and portable archery ranges.
  • Marketing will again be on radio, Facebook, Facebook ads, in newspapers, and more.
  • Trainings have already been taking place. If you have not been able to attend a training, visit: www.JoinCubs.org and use the leader resources are to find an online training opportunity and resources available in the fall.
  • For units conducting summer recruiting events, or participating in town parades, festivals, celebrations etc., contact your Program Relations Executive for support materials.

Family Scouting

On February 1, young women were able to register in Scouts BSA. As of June 14, we have 51 troops for girls in Scouts BSA in Northern Star Scouting, and 376 young women registered in these troops!

Of these 43 troops, several have already had a Court of Honor, and we have heard that numerous merit badges and badges of rank have been handed out.

And, 20 of these 43 troops are already signed up to attend a Scout summer camp at either Many Point Scout Camp or Tomahawk Scout Reservation.

More than 25 young women have already been selected for and are registered for one of our Grey Wolf (our National Youth Leadership Training) courses to be held this summer.

And, we have also learned that at least four young women have been elected in to the Order of the Arrow by their troop. Those elected will have the opportunity to participate in an upcoming Order of the Arrow weekend.

And, with just a little over a year of girls being able to join Cub Scouts, we currently have 1,029 girls registered in our packs!

Training available for those in Family Scouting

Our April Outdoor Leadership Skills Course (for troop leaders) was FILLED. So another course has been added in September. Visit http://www.northernstar.org/For-Members/Training for the dates and fees for this upcoming course.

Courses for new troop leaders are also available this summer at the Philmont Training Center – a TREMENDOIUS place for a Scouting family to spend a week. Filled with Scouting activities, with a great balance for family time – Philmont Scout Ranch is located in the mountains near Cimarron, New Mexico. Check out PTC course offerings at:
