Scouting and Youth Safety

Dear Scouters,

As you may be aware, the decision in New York state to suspend the statute of limitations on child sexual abuse claims has led to plaintiff’s attorneys issuing press releases and seeking media coverage that will raise awareness among potential clients. The resulting stories have had number of inaccurate and misleading statements regarding youth safety in Scouting. Here are the facts:

  1. Scouting is and always has been one of the safest places for 120 million youth members for more than 100 years.
  2. The BSA’s Youth Protection practices and policies have been cited by safety professionals as the gold standard for all youth organizations.
  3. No harm to a child is ever acceptable. Since the implementation of two deep leadership in 1987, sexual abuse has been practically eliminated in Scouting. We must remain vigilant and work with the larger community to end it everywhere.

The New York decision is also the primary cause of the potential financial restructuring (bankruptcy) of the National Council of the BSA. Northern Star Scouting is largely insulated from that event; we own our assets and resources locally, are governed locally and are financially strong.
