Scouts Learn From Handsome Hog Owner

​Scouts got a once-in-a-lifetime experience from celebrity chef Justin Sutherland on April 10. As part of the Popcorn Adventure prize program, 18 Scouts received hands-on teaching from Justin during the Iron Chopped III event. Scouts learned how to make his famous biscuits served at his restaurant, the Handsome Hog in St. Paul. Scouts got their hands “dirty” creating some masterpieces they could then eat. Justin was a Scout in Troop 293 in Apple Valley and values his time in Scouting. While the biscuits were baking, Justin shared where his love of cooking came from and offered some advice to the Scouts in the Q & A session.

“Start trying stuff! You’re Cub Scouts, you get to try new stuff all the time!”

Growing up in St. Paul, Justin spent his childhood in the kitchen watching his mother and grandmother cook, as well as his favorite TV show, “Yan Can Cook”. For his 5th birthday, Justin asked for and received an Easy Bake Oven.  All of these things together, inspired him to pursue his passion and develop his career, centered on food and family. One of his other passions is giving back to his community. This past year at the start of the pandemic and restaurant closings, Justin teamed up with other local restaurateurs and took the items in their restaurant coolers and transformed his Public Kitchen and Bar into a place where anyone could come and pick up free food.
