Supersized Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills Training Held
Over 150 Scouts BSA leaders and staff gathered at Fred C. Andersen Scout Camp the weekend of April 23-24 for a great training and leadership development event! Over 115 participants registered for this “Spring Training” weekend that covered both Intro to Outdoor Leader Skills and Scoutmaster Position Specific Training in a fun, fast-paced, and hands-on format. Participants were divided into patrols to experience a weekend campout focused on learning practical skills like fire-building, first aid, knots, knife and ax safety, and plant and animal ID. They also learned about the leadership skills necessary to deliver a quality Scouts BSA program. In addition to meeting great Instructors and Troop Guides, the participants were also able to enjoy the natural beauty of Fred C. Andersen Scout Camp.
Northern Star Scouting typically holds this course 3 times a year, but due to last winter’s course being postponed for COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s Spring course was “supersized” as 2 full troops of 8 patrols. Despite the challenges of quirky Spring weather (including snow) and COVID safety protocols, the participants and staff had a great & worthwhile experience. Special thanks to Jerry Bru and Dave Oster who served as Scoutmasters for the weekend. Their leadership in pulling together 2 excellent staffs for this amazing event will truly help deliver on the vision that “ALL SCOUTS DESERVE A TRAINED LEADER”. Thank you also to all the staff, as well as the participants, who gave up their weekend to invest in teaching and learning these valuable skills.
Planning for the Fall course has already started for a repeat of this course the weekend of Sept 11-12 at Stearns Scout camp. Reserve your spot today by visiting https://scoutingevent.com/250-IOLSFallTraining2021 as this course will certainly fill fast.
