International Scouting Update

Curious as to what Scouting is like elsewhere around the globe? One of the great aspects of the Scouting program is that there are plenty of opportunities to interact with global Scouting community, both at home and abroad.

Many of you might be familiar with the World Scout Jamboree, which is an event held every four years as a gathering of the National Scout Organizations that make-up the World Organization of the Scouting Movement (WOSM). The World Jamboree may only come around every four years, but there are plenty of other events that Scouts from the Boy Scouts of America are invited to attend each year. Check of the Boy Scouts of America's international events page for more information on upcoming adventures abroad (scouting.org/international/events).

Looking for global Scouting experiences closer to home? Annually, WOSM hosts the Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI) and the Jamboree on the Air (JOTA), both of which occur during the month of October. JOTI is an interactive event that enables youth to connect with Scouts from around the world, learn about global citizenship, take part in social media challenges, and so much more. Similarly, JOTA is an interactive event that enables youth to connect with Scouts from around the world through amateur radio. Due to the global emphasis on social distancing in the wake of COVID-19, many Scouts had the opportunity to take part in a special edition of JOTI in early April. The regularly scheduled JOTA/JOTI event will take place over the weekend of October 16th-18th, 2020, with a Council-sponsored event to take place at the North Star Museum of Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting on October 17th. More details about the Fall events will be available in the coming months.

For many Scouts the Michigan International Camporee is a great way to experience a multi-national Scouting event while staying in the upper Midwest. The next event is scheduled for July 2022.  Limited space is available for units outside of the state of Michigan, so check out the event site for more information on contingent size and the sign-up process: micamporee.org.
