National BSA Launches Citizenship in the Society Merit Badge
Will become a required merit badge for Eagle Scout effective July 1, 2022
On November 1 the Boy Scouts of America launched the Citizenship in Society merit badge, its newest merit badge for youth in the Scouts BSA program. It was developed with input from Scouting volunteers, youth, and professional staff, as well as external advisors and other non-profit youth organizations.
Scouts can begin completing the requirements now as merit badge counselors are being recruited and trained. It will become one of the 21 merit badges required for the Eagle Scout Rank starting July 1, 2022.
- The approach of this merit badge is for the Scout to independently explore and research to enhance their personal learning and growth. The process of earning this merit badge intentionally places the responsibility for research and identification of resources on the youth.
- Northern Star Scouting will not provide links or resources to the counselors for this merit badge, beyond the guide that instructs them to listen to each Scout and verify that they met the spirit and intent of the badge – to engage in self-discovery and learning.
- Merit badge counselors will not provide viewpoints or resources to the Scout, but will engage the youth in presenting what the Scout has learned and how they might apply what they learned in their own life.
