Scouts Choose their own Adventure at Spring Camporee
Nearly 350 Scouts from 34 Troops enjoyed an action-packed weekend May 12-14 at Stearns Scout Camp. Troops were encouraged to invite Webelos Scouts and their parents to join them and introduce them to the Troop and the Scouts BSA program. We had 62 Webelos Scouts and adults participating. In addition to our volunteers, we had over 500 Scouts and adults in camp. Rain didn't put much of a damper on the event as Scouts showed they were prepared and carried on through the drops.
A dedicated and enthusiastic group of Order of the Arrow youth assisted with the event and put on an exciting closing ceremony with numerous skits and songs as well as a thoughtful reflection from the Lodge Chief on his experience in Scouting, closing with a single large circle rendition of Scout Vespers.
The program options included a number of STEM activities offered by various groups. We also made use of some of the existing features of Stearns Camp, including the disc golf course which was very popular! Other highlights included an obstacle course, shooting sports, and the climbing tower. Scouts learned compass skills, ran an orienteering course, played giant Jenga, and the ever-popular Gaga Ball.
A few Patrols tested their skill and participated in the Star Patrol Skills Challenge, demonstrating skill in five areas including knots, lashing, first aid, map and compass, and constellations. It was very challenging and only one Patrol achieved the 2-Star level but several expressed appreciation for the event and a desire to practice the skills and try again in the future.
Adults enjoyed some training and information for them including Troop Committee training, advanced Dutch Oven cooking, information about new Leave No Trace advancement requirements, and a discussion for Webelos parents about the transition to Scouts BSA.
Be sure to put this event on your Troop and Pack calendars for May 17-19, 2024 at Stearns Scout Camp. Note that the 2024 dates do not conflict with Mothers’ Day or the Fishing Opener!
