Celebrating Excellence: 2026 Venturing Leadership Award Recipients

The Northern Star Scouting community is proud to recognize the extraordinary Venturers who have gone above and beyond in service, leadership, and dedication. At the annual Venturing Recognition Brunch on April 11, 2026, these individuals were honored with Venturing Leadership Awards (VLA) and related distinctions for their outstanding contributions at the council and territory levels.


2026 Council Venturing Leadership Award Recipients

Keith Turner – Crew 196

Keith Turner played a vital role in strengthening the Council VOA this past year, stepping into multiple leadership roles and co-leading six events that brought together Venturers from across — and even beyond — the council. His commitment to collaboration and program growth has left a lasting impact.

Mara Johnson – Crew 1776

Mara Johnson is known for making every Venturer feel welcomed and involved, particularly in high adventure planning. Her passion for inclusion and leadership truly embodies her motto: “Lead the Adventure.” She continues to serve as a model leader as she transitions into an adult role.

Zac Byers – Crew 1776

Demonstrating remarkable adaptability, Zac Byers served two years as Crew President—even while leading remotely. From virtual meetings to in-person adventures during breaks, Zac’s humor, mentorship, and dedication kept his crew engaged and thriving.

Justice Hequet – Crew 1776

Justice Hequet set an ambitious goal—and achieved it. By recruiting new members, he successfully built participation strong enough to form a full crew for Philmont. His enthusiasm and persistence helped sustain long-term engagement within the crew.

Jenn Mangan – Crew 196

Jenn Mangan has shown exceptional commitment to youth development, consistently empowering others by “leading from behind.” Her mentorship style inspires Venturers to grow, explore, and take on new challenges with confidence.

Matthew Mangan – Crew 196

A visionary leader, Matthew Mangan co-founded Crew 196 to expand opportunities beyond the traditional troop experience. His initiative has fostered leadership development, sustained engagement, and enriched the Venturing program for many.

Vicki Jurek – Crew 3477

Vicki Jurek’s unwavering dedication and mentorship have strengthened her crew’s confidence, teamwork, and accountability. Her balanced approach to leadership encourages Venturers to embrace every opportunity the program offers.

Venturing Scholarship Recipient

Joseph Yapp – Crew 8
Joseph Yapp was honored as the 2026 Venturing Scholarship recipient, recognizing both his achievements and his continued commitment to the values of Venturing.


Territory Venturing Leadership Award (TVLA)

Matthew Higley – Territory 4

Matthew Higley, Council Support Territory 4 President (2025–2026), received the prestigious Territory Venturing Leadership Award. His leadership at both the council and territory levels—combined with his experience as an Eagle Scout, Wood Badge graduate, and Northern Tier staff member—highlights his dedication to developing others and strengthening the Venturing program.
