What is “The Roy Young Society”
The Roy Young Society honors individuals who secure the future of Northern Star Scouting through outright gifts or estate commitments to the Northern Star Trust. WAYS TO GIVE TO THE ENDOWMENT FUND
An outright gift can be made at any time. It is your most immediate way to support the Northern Star Scouting.
A bequest by will is also an effective way of giving and the most common method used to support Scouting. Your bequest may specify a dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or a residual of your estate.
There are other methods of making contributions. Examples of planned giving, as well as the benefits derived by the donor, are described in the Planned Giving Chart at the back of this pamphlet.
GIFTS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE
Your gifts to the Northern Star Trust are tax deductible for income tax purposes. Other tax benefits, including favorable capital gains and estate tax treatment, are generally available through planned giving arrangements. The Planned Giving Team can assist you and your financial and estate planning professional in analyzing the specific tax benefits from your gift to Scouting.
INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT
Northern Star Scouting’s Board of Directors has the overall responsibility for managing gifts to the Northern Star Trust Fund, including the preservation, growth, and use of these funds. Responsibility for the investment of your gift is shared by the Board of Directors and Northern Star Scouting’s Investment Committee who contracts for the services of professional fund managers. The Northern Star Scouting's long-term investment objectives are to safely grow the endowment through prudent and responsible investments.
DESIGNATION OF BEQUESTS AND GIFTS
The Planned Giving Team will work with you to make sure your gift accomplishes what you have in mind. A bequest or gift is a great way to honor a relative, a good friend or your unit's leadership. Your gift can be for a specific program, camp or any other stated purpose. Your gift can also be for the general purposes of Northern Star Scouting without restriction; thus, permitting your gift to have the greatest impact on the future of Scouting. Unrestricted gifts allow Northern Star Scouting to adjust to future or changing conditions so that your gift can be used where there is the greatest current need.
Generally, it will be the practice of the Northern Star Scouting Board of Directors to place undesignated gifts and bequests in the Endowment Fund where only the income, on a total return basis, will be used for current operations.
